No racing over this long holiday weekend for both the Richard's and the
Wenzel's which gave us the opportunity to go for a long "loop" ride in the Richard's back yard at
Maplelag. Jay is familiar with every road and trail in the area which makes him an
excellent tour guide.

From left, Tom
Clow, Jake Richard's, Matt
Wenzel and Jay. The weather was perfect - cool and windless. The brush is still minimal and the bugs are still thinking about coming out which made for a nice day in the woods.

Jay and Jake making their way up the high point of the ride. Jay has reviewed
topo maps and informed us that the ridge that we were riding flows all the way down to Detroit Lakes to what use to be a ski hill. As the crow flies, the location that we were at is about 14 miles NE of
DL.

A lot of our ride was on a network of ATV trails that boarded the
Tamarac Wildlife Refuge. The man sitting on the ATV was out enjoying the day as well. He lives in the area and said that the trail system is improving every season. The trails are really nice, not all rutted and ripped up as they are in the Paul Bunyan Forest trail system. Jay said that the trails are used for people working the area water resources for leach trapping.
The ATV guy had head phones on and was not listening for a bunch of mountain bikers to come up behind him. Jay scared the heck out of him. Nice mullet.

Of course Jake and Matt had a great time.

We saw this bird on the road going in and on the way out - it is a
Scarlet Tanager.Bright red that stuck out in the woods big time.

We finished the ride hitting the single track at
Maplelag. The section that we are on above is the tail end of the continuous loop that Jay and Jake are in the process of building. When it is complete it will be a great addition to the already famous
Maplelag single track.

Yikes! Matt, Jake and Jay had the
cahonies to jump into the lake post ride. I was very happy in just standing by and eating the muffins that Jonell made us.

That is a bunch of cold dudes. I could make all kinds of wise cracks but will keep them to myself. Matt - you need some sun.
We rode 25 miles in just under three hours. Jay nailed the distance and the time and we had a great ride. It was cool that TC (Tom Clow) was able to join us at the last minute as he had never been in the area and rode strong all morning.
Still two days left of the holiday weekend - Cheers!
