Paul Bunyan State Forest

As hoped, Matt, Ben and I made a day trip up to the Paul Bunyan State Forest to ride mountain bike on some of the best single track in the state of MN. We met the Ellefson family - Jack, Anne, Summer and Lars along with Jake Richards. We were not on a real time commitment which was nice. When we left Fargo it was bright sunny skies, as we moved East, the skies clouded up but did not threaten rain. Almost perfect for a day of riding in the woods.
Having some fun at Matt's expense. He fell asleep on the way. Ben and I accessorized him with fruit snacks. Matt had the head bobs something terrible, but the fruit snack on his hat never came off. When he woke up he laughed and went on to eat every last one.
The group out on the trail minus Ben. Ben rode for over an hour and decided to hang in the pick-up for our second loop. Ben is a trooper. He is a couple years behind being able to keep up with the "big boys", but loves to go and tries very hard to keep up. He has the skills to ride single track and does a great job. He gets better every trip.

We rode two loops in perfect conditions. The trees are still not full which makes for great sight lines in the corners. In my opinion, the second section was better than the first. It was a lot cleaner of downed trees and flowed a lot smoother. I have been coming up to this area for over 20 years. There are miles of single track but it changes yearly with the clear cutting of trees along with new trails. The motorized trail clubs in the area due a great job of making everyone happy in segregating four wheeler trails from motorcycle trails. We usually try to stick to the motorcycle trails as they are tighter and more technical. Finding your way can be a challenge, but roads intersect frequently which allows you to at least get back to a major road if you are lost.

The Ellefsons (as mentioned in the past are moving to Durango, CO in June) had not been here before. From the sounds of it, they enjoyed the trails. Jake of course loved it and will be back with us for sure as there is a lot of trail to explore. We rode for almost three hours without any major catastrophes. It was a great day!

Matt rode very well. He has been to PB numerous times and is getting to know where he is going. Someday we should hire out our services as trail guides. That will never work as it is a pleasure and a privilege to ride up here. I am sure that both of us would do it for free!Post ride feast at Grandma's. Kriston sent hot dogs, beans and chips. We cooked them on Grandpa's grill. 15 hot dogs between Matt, Ben, Jake and I. Grandpa helped us out by eating one and there was one left on the grill. Note the brownies sitting by the bag of chips - Grandma came through with her specialty and did not disappoint as the brownies were a perfect end to a great meal. Thanks Mom!These three toads received a few looks from the locals. Froze their butts off but they cleaned up nicely. Not sure, but I bet they were the first guys in the lake this spring. People from the resort came out on their decks to watch the shenanigans. The report from all three was that it was cold! I did not have the cahonies to attempt the jump - next time.
